Harare police, together with the community police forum and community leaders, held a prayer meeting at the scene of a mass killing that claimed the lives of eight people.
Two women were among the eight people shot dead in two related incidents in Botyi Street and Ncumo Road in the early hours of Wednesday April 17 (“Eight people shot dead in Harare,” Vukani, April 18).
At the meeting on Thursday May 2, the Harare police station’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Nosiphiwo Mntengwane, said murders, carjackings and other serious crimes had increased sharply in the precinct.
“We want God to help us in fighting crime, and we want our communities to work with us in fighting crime. We want to see better communities becoming a great place to raise children,“ she said.
Chairperson of the Harare police station’s spiritual desk, Pastor Lucky Kulati, said: “We have never seen eight people in this community killed at one time. This has shocked us, and we do not want to see it happen again. No one has the right to take someone else’s life. No one. We are all God’s children.”
Harare Community Police Forum chairperson Funeka Soldaat said they appreciated every effort made to fight crime in the community.
