Khayelitsha’s Cosat top school at education awards
The Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT), a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) focus school in Khayelitsha, was named the best performing township school at a Metro East Education District (MED) award ceremony last week.
At the event, the MED celebrated its top achievers in the 2021 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams at an award ceremony at Bellville High School.
Top-performing high schools were invited to an excellence awards ceremony at which schools and pupils were awarded for their exceptional achievements.
Among them was Cosat which achieved a 97.1% pass rate, 74.5% Bachelor pass rate, 21% diploma passes, 4.5% certificate pass rate and 193 subject distinctions.
MED director Landeka Diamond, hosted the class of 2021 to congratulate them on their results. In her speech, Ms Diamond said out of nine districts, her district had steadily improved its results.
“I am glad that we are taking a step in the right direction. We have to do our work of educating these children. We have to do better in the next examinations,” she said.
She added, however, that she was delighted with the results considering that they had been achieved after two years of a global pandemic, and acknowledged that the class of 2021 had had a tough two years.
“I am excited and happy with the progress. But I feel we can do better. This district must steady the ship and be among the best in the province.
“I'm positive we will do well and be counted among the best,” she said.
Representing the areas covered by Vukani, were Uxolo High, Chris Hani, Joe Slovo, Siphamandla, Esangweni and Usasazo who were called to the podium a couple of times.
Among the award recipients was delighted former Masiyile pupil Thimna Mvana who is currently studying dental science at University of the Western Cape. She praised teachers for the hard work they put in during difficult times.
