Mzimkhulu Nojozi was killed in Gugulethu on Sunday.
Gugulethu is in shock after 63-year-old black belt and court interpreter Mzikhulu Nojozi was slain on Sunday morning after he refused to pay a protection fee.
Mr Nojozi, a senior interpreter at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, was also part of the 2024 electioneering committee of the Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo), and according to the party’s provincial chairperson, Zukile Sinama, he had faced threats to pay a protection fee shortly before he was shot in NY 2.
“He was adamant. He was not going to pay, and we did not take note of this, but now we are going to look for them in all corners,” said Mr Sinama. “By killing Nojozi, they have touched a wrong button.”
Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said the motive for the killing was part of the police investigation.
“Police attended to the crime scene, and upon arrival, they found a man lying on the street with a gunshot wound sustained to his body. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” she said.
Karate coach Marius Conjani described Mr Nojozi as a “humble and exemplary leader” who children aspired to follow.
“We are devastated and hopeful that the police can put those responsible behind bars.”
Gugulethu Community Police Forum spokesman Linda Kabeni condemned the killing of Mr Nojozi as a cowardly act and urged the police to arrest those responsible.
“We send condolences to the family while sending harshest condemnation to the killers,” he said.
