The Heritage Research and Education Project (HERP) joins millions of South Africans in paying tribute to one of the country’s well-known cultural icons, Timmy Kwebulana, who hails from Langa.
Kwebulana, affectionately known as Bra Tim or Rhadebe, died on Thursday, after a prolonged illness.
His death has robbed the arts world of an immense talent who left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Cape Town, South Africa, and the world.
During a remarkable career spanning more than 40 years, this talented South African actor and musician made a significant contribution to the arts, both on stage and in film.
He was also a jazz artist, collaborating with some of the top musicians in the country.
In the 1980s, Bra Tim was part of the original cast of the influential play Born in the RSA, which was developed by Barney Simon at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. This protest play, a response to the declaration of the 1985 State of Emergency, was used as a platform to tell stories of life under the oppressive apartheid regime.
Inevitably, Bra Tim’s work continued to be a mirror of the hardships experienced by many black people. He used his craft as a tool of social commentary and change in opposition to the discriminatory practices perpetrated by the then National Party government.
Not being a one-dimensional actor, Bra Tim was also involved in television series that entertained his audiences.
The well-travelled and popular actor participated in a variety of notable projects, including:
Abakwazidenge: A drama series showcasing his versatility.
Ingqumbo Yeminyanya: A series that was based on the legendary Xhosa story.
Unyana Womntu: A series that entrenched his status in the South African television industry.
Uthando Lwethu: A drama that highlighted his ability to portray complex characters.
Shooting Stars: A popular series in which Bra Tim delivered memorable performances.
Forced Love: A romantic comedy based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, in which he played the character of Mbulelo.
Isikizi: A Xhosa-language television drama series, based on the mythical Greek story of Oedipus, the tragic tale of an honourable but impulsive young man who runs away from his home in a desperate attempt to escape a dreadful prophecy.
Bra Tim’s legacy continues to inspire many in the South African arts community. His sterling contribution continues to be celebrated for their depth and authenticity.
HERP extends heartfelt condolences to Bra Tim’s family and their loved ones during this difficult period.
