A young and upcoming Maskandi artist from the streets of Philippi, Afikile Milwa aka Gwebindlala, who originally hails from Engcobo in the Eastern Cape, has released his debut album titled Ziyalamba.
The 35-year-old soft spoken artist says the album contains uplifting songs and aims incorporate the sound of the Eastern Cape. He says just like every artist he writes songs based on life experiences or on things happening around the world but some songs come through dreams.
He says for years he had been yearning for an opportunity to put together an album and ensure that he puts his village on the map. He says back in the day, this kind of genre was often described as outdated or meant for people who were not educated, but now things have changed.

“I’m glad that I have managed to fulfil my childhood dream of releasing an album. I call all the people of Eastern Cape and Western Cape to please support this body of work. I have literally given every part of my body into making this album. I have given my soul so that this album could find a place in everybody's heart, soul, mind and body. I hope that when one listens to this album emotions are evoked and people look at life differently,” he said.
Talking about his musical journey, he says he bought his guitar in 2018 so that they could at least learn the instrument and be able to understand which sound and rhythm he wanted.
He says he was grateful to Phantsukwenzekala, another maskandi artist who has played a key role in ensuring that the album was completed.
He says he hopes and prays that the album would open many doors and opportunities for him to grow as an artist and brand. He called on the maskandi lovers to rally behind his work.
