The JL Zwane Memorial Church's Women of Substance held a career expo at the Gugulethu sports complex on Saturday with more than 500 pupils from various schools in attendance.
The event themed, Unlocking Potential: Your Career Road Map Starts Here, was packed with speakers from various industries and was supported by tertiary institutions including UWC, CPUT, and Northlink and False Bay colleges.
One of the organisers, Nomakhaya Dlulani-Mati, said they were overwhelmed with the response received from schools in the area.
"We invited almost every Grade 8 to 12 learner in the area and they came in numbers showing interest in their future. We really thank teachers and parents who ensured that they attended," said Dlulani-Mati.
Mbulelo Ntsente from Gugulethu said: "Women of Substance at JL Zwane Memorial Church in Gugulethu did it once again. In its ninth year now, the JL Zwane Career Expo was a resounding success. We look forward to the tenth version in 2026 and trust that it will continue to prosper for many more years to come. JL Zwane is indeed 'a teaching and learning congregation'."
Nolitha Mboto, an advocate, addressed pupils on her career path and was impressed with the level of questions from them. "They are curious and want to know every aspect. I am sure they left inspired.
Fezeka High School Grade 9 pupil, Sizwe Maifa, said the expo has made him pay more attention to his studies. "There was a lot of information shared and I hope all those in attendance got some valuable tips for the future," said Sizwe.
Unathi Scwele from Langa High said she learnt a lot about careers she knew nothing about before and would carry on researching them.
Featured careers included medical doctors, lawyers, occupational therapists and those involved in tourism.
