Ilitha Labantu held a no bail picket at the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court, opposing the release of Siyabonga Zono, who stands accused of the rape and kidnapping a 20-year-old woman.
Mr Zono made his second appearance for a formal bail application; however, the matter was postponed due to the unavailability of the investigating officer, who is currently attending a professional development course.
The court ruled that the case will take priority at the next appearance.
Mr Zono allegedly abducted the woman at knifepoint on Monday March 31 as she was returning home from a boxing tournament. He is accused of dragging her to various locations in Khayelitsha, where she was repeatedly raped throughout the night.
An attempt to hand her over to an accomplice failed, and she was ultimately rescued by one of the accused’s relatives.
Ilitha Labantu said they stands in full solidarity with the woman and her family.
"As she navigates the legal system, we continue to provide court support, guidance, and advocacy to ensure her rights are protected and that justice is pursued. Violence against women has no place in our society. Perpetrators must be held accountable, and the justice system must be at the centre of ensuring the safety, rights, and dignity of survivors."
