The Animal Rescue Organisation (ARO), a non-profit is calling on animal lovers, schools, businesses, and volunteers to join forces for the pack-a-pet-bag party event taking place on Mandela Day, Friday July 18.
The initiative is a hands-on community event aimed at helping vulnerable pets in under-resourced communities.
The ARO, based in Ottery, is calling on the public to make financial donations to buy supplies like food, leads, bowls, pet blankets, something warm for the owner and educational material on how to care for their pet.
Once packed, the bags will be distributed through ARO’s mobile clinic, reaching pets in communities like Jim se Bos, Phumlani, Egoli, and beyond.
Head of fundraising and communications at ARO, Lindsey Concer said Mandela Day is all about giving your time and making a difference.
"We believe every pet deserves kindness too and these care packages aren’t just gifts, they’re lifelines for pets whose families can’t afford basic essentials,” she said.
Ms Concer said the event is also part of the ARO’s larger mobile three campaign, which is raising funds to launch a brand new third mobile veterinary clinic to serve areas where access to vet care is limited or non-existent.
She said her organisation is encouraging companies and community organisations to bring staff to volunteer for their 67 minutes of service or even host their own packing party at their offices.
“The need is enormous, but so is the love people have for their animals, with your help, we can pack 670 packages of hope and deliver care right to the doorstep of those who need it most,” she said.
The public is welcome to join ARO at its pack-a-pet-bag party at 5 Olieboom Road, Ottery to volunteer their time to help packing of supplies.
Tickets for this event can be purchased via Quicket and is free.
However, each pet box costs R100 to make and ARO are encouraging volunteers to donate towards this cause.
