Mdzananda Animal Clinic is appealing to the public for support and justice following the heartbreaking death of a young puppy named Survivor, who died as a result of severe abuse.
Now in its 29th year, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter remains the only animal care facility serving the Khayelitsha township. It provides a wide range of services including veterinary consultations, surgery, hospitalisation, a mobile clinic, animal ambulance, continuous sterilisation, education programmes, and shelter for homeless pets. Approximately 1,500 animals are treated each month.
Survivor, just a few weeks old, was brought in by his owner after a failed attempt to neuter him at home using a sharp blade. The clinic’s veterinary team rushed him into emergency surgery and intensive care, but despite their efforts, he died from shock a few days later.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking cases we’ve seen,” said Ms Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda. “No animal should endure such cruelty. We will be taking this case to prosecution and will not stop fighting for justice.”

Sadly, Survivor’s case is not an isolated incident. Just last month, another abused puppy named Scooby arrived at Mdzananda, and in the same timeframe, four dogs were rescued with deep wounds caused by chains embedded in their necks.
The clinic is calling on the public to assist with emergency donations, which help fund life-saving surgeries, legal efforts to hold abusers accountable, community education to prevent neglect, and the care of abused animals as they recover and await adoption.
“Your support gives abused animals a second chance—and a voice when they have none,” said Ms du Plessis. “We are deeply grateful for every contribution.”
