On a chilly winter morning in Langa township, a group of university students from the United States visited the area as part of a cultural exchange programme.

The students are participating in the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) initiative, which brings young people from the US to Cape Town to learn about local communities and cultures.

Evelyn Moorhouse, a student from Florida, said she wanted to come to Africa to learn about different cultures.

“There’s not a lot of difference between us and Africa, but the barbecue here is the best. I would really recommend African cuisines to the world,” she said.

Trinity Thomas, from Alabama, said: “It’s populated but nice. My only problem is the cold weather. I would love to come back in summer and experience the vibe.”

The visit included a guided tour through the streets of Langa and a stop at Nomzamo restaurant, where the group tasted local dishes including pap, wors and bunny chow.

So’Nia Brown, from the University of Iowa, said: “There are so many colours I normally don’t see. Riding around is so much fun. Everyone is so welcoming, and when they look at me, they smile.”

CIEE coordinator Indiphile Sotomela said the students are in Cape Town to experience both the city and its communities.

“The students come to experience Cape Town, but there’s also a learning element. They go into communities and learn about the different cultures, which is invaluable,” she said.

Mzikhona Mgedle from the Langa Bicycle Hub said: “It’s exciting to welcome such vibrant people who are eager to learn. Langa is home to musicians, artists, and delicious restaurants, making it the perfect place to enjoy life.”

The visit is one of several planned activities in the city as part of the CIEE programme.
