For Mandela Day, marked July 18, members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) visited Elukhuselweni Educare in Site B, Khayelitsha, to carry out upgrades and hand over donations on Friday.
The initiative saw local DA structures and their affiliated charity organisation collect paint, flooring material, party packs for children, and blankets for elderly residents in the community.
Ward councillor Nondumiso Mvinjelwa said the condition of the pre-school prompted her to act after being approached by the principal.
“We are in the spirit of 67 minutes, and our aim is purely to help. Lucky is this pre-school because the principal approached me and I had to speak to the members of the DA, and they were able to bring the necessities to the crèche,” she said.
Ms Mvinjelwa said that giving back was central to her values and her political mandate.“I was raised in a manner that I should provide where I can. I grew up in the spirit of Ubuntu. Besides that, politics is meant to improve people’s lives. We are in politics to serve the people and develop our areas.”
She said the effort was aligned with the Mandela Day call to devote 67 minutes to community service.
Principal Nobanele Mandlana welcomed the donations, saying the improvements would go a long way in supporting the children and the community.
“This is the best gift ever that I have received from these people. I am grateful. This gives me confidence and hope from politics. I now believe that politicians can deliver,” she said.
Ms Mandlana said the upgrades – including the new ceiling, painting, and flooring – had already made a noticeable difference. However, she added that the pre-school still needed further support.
“There is still a lot that is needed in my school. I need a playing field, paving, more ceilings, and blankets. My 48 children have no proper space to play, but I am hoping a Good Samaritan will come one day,” she said.
