Amaqhawe Ngemfundo (Heroes Through Education), a non-profit organisation, has launched a campaign to help Grade 12 learners apply to institutions of higher learning ahead of time.
The initiative kicked off on Saturday, July 26, at Luhlaza High School and Joe Slovo Engineering High School, where pupils were guided through the tertiary application process by professionals and student volunteers from the University of the Western Cape.
The campaign aims to address challenges such as late applications, which often prevent academically strong pupils from accessing tertiary education and securing future employment.

Founder Professor Fanelwa Ngece-Ajayi stressed the importance of early applications and community support. “Many learners apply late or not at all, then try walk-ins in January. We want to break that cycle, especially in black schools."
She added that Amaqhawe encourages active citizenship and community service through volunteerism. “Amaqhawe has been there for formerly underprivileged children. We are striving to improve education for underprivileged kids and create real opportunities for young people. Our goal is to ensure that our children are well-informed about their options. There is talent in the townships that is not being nurtured by those of us who are knowledgeable.

Many children apply late or do not apply at all, opting instead for walk-ins at tertiary centres. With this campaign, we aim to discourage that habit, particularly in our black schools."
Volunteer Anele Nikani said it was fulfilling to help students navigate their futures and avoid the stress of last-minute applications. The enthusiasm of the learners was clear, as both halls were filled with hopeful pupils eager to secure their study options.
Amaqhawe, in partnership with Lady in Red Pty Ltd, also assists with bursary applications and provides academic resources and training to high school learners.
