Monwabisi Beach, the stretch of coastline behind Khayelitsha, has fallen into disarray after years of vandalism and neglect — sparking concern among residents about the City’s commitment to maintaining vital public spaces.

A recent visit by community members of the Vukani area revealed broken infrastructure and widespread damage, leaving many to ask: "What is the City doing to save this once-vibrant beach?"

For many residents of the surrounding townships, Monwabisi Beach is more than just a leisure spot; it represents a piece of infrastructure that promotes community engagement and economic opportunity. “Recreational infrastructure serves townships across the city,” one resident said, stressing that access to safe, well-kept facilities is crucial for community well-being.

Concerns also extend beyond Monwabisi. Reports suggest other recreational areas along the Cape Town coast are facing similar challenges, raising fears that without urgent intervention, more spaces could be lost.

A revitalised beach would offer a platform for local vendors, promote tourism, and provide a safe space for community gatherings, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents. Yet, as of now, there has been a conspicuous absence of action or communication from city officials regarding their plans to address these issues. Improvement plans could not only restore the beach's aesthetic appeal but also optimise opportunities for social and economic growth.

Local activists and businesses have long called for the City to step in. And now, there finally appears to be progress.

The mayoral committee member for community services and health, Francine Higham, said that the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has confirmed that the Monwabisi Beach upgrade will take place in a phased approach over three financial years. The concept design and public participation are complete.

Mr Higham said the detailed design is currently in progress.

“The detailed plans will be submitted for approval in the second half of this year, along with the demolition of the derelict structures currently on site. The 2026/27 financial year will see the redevelopment of the facility, which will include a formalised parking area, ablution building, lifeguard building and trading area,” he said.

Finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the popular beach.
