While many people mark their birthdays with private celebrations among family and friends, Ndithini Tyhido chose to spend his 53rd birthday on Monday, August 25, by giving back to the community.
The former Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) chairperson and current chair of the ANC’s Dullar Omar region donated a wheelchair and a parcel of groceries to Nyameko Ngxamngxa, a 61-year-old woman from the TR Section informal settlement.
Ms Ngxamngxa, who lost her mobility in 2017 following a brief illness, said she was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.
“The wheelchair was a total surprise,” she said.
“I’ve long needed one, but I never imagined that someone, especially a stranger, would bless me like this. Over the years, my condition has worsened. I live with my children and grandchildren, and I have to be carried to the toilet. I used to be independent, but now I depend on others. This wheelchair will change my life, especially for going to the clinic. I’ll be pushed now instead of being carried like a bag.”

Mr Tyhido, known for his easy-going nature and dedication to community service, said he often uses his birthday to help those in need.
“People sometimes see politicians’ good deeds as part of campaigning, and yes, that does happen, but there are also times when the help is genuine. I didn’t know this granny. I only heard about her situation on the morning of my birthday while I was thinking about how to mark the day. I felt she needed this more than anyone else.”
Mr Tyhido said turning 53 was especially meaningful to him.
“There were times in my life I never thought I’d make it to fifty, so I’m grateful. I want to be a good father, a good son, a good brother, and a good contributor to the community of Khayelitsha, which I serve wholeheartedly. Every time I do something positive, it’s a tribute to my parents," he said, adding that he was the black sheep of the family, and "I want to make them proud.”
He also called on others to give whatever they can to uplift those around them.
“If we want to create a better society, we need to build consciousness and develop love and care for one another,” he said.
“One day, I hope no one will need help from others because everyone will have enough. That would be true freedom.”
