Bishops Diocesan College raised more than R1 million during its 24-hour Cycle Challenge last weekend in support of the VUSA Rugby and Learning Academy in Langa.
The event, held on stationary bikes at the Rondebosch school from Saturday, September 6 to Sunday, September 7, drew support from fellow schools, corporates, families, and Stormers rugby players, who cycled through the night to raise funds for education, nutrition, and skills development for over 1 400 children from the Langa-based non-profit.
This is the fifth year that Bishops’ school and friends have hosted this fundraising event to support VUSA.
COO of VUSA, Nikki Matthews said every child deserves a safe space, a hot meal, and the chance to shine. “Through English, maths, coding, sport, art, and music, VUSA helps children reach their potential,” she said.
One of Bishops' neighbouring schools, Bishops Preparatory School, also joined the cycle challenge. The principal, Greg Brown, said, “Riding alongside the community reflects the heart of Bishops and what we can achieve together.”
Bishops Grade 12 pupils Alex Laspatzis and Samuel Purchase completed their cycle challenge.
