It was a day of joy and celebration at Siphamandla High School in Khayelitsha as the South African National Petroleum Company (SAPNC) officially handed over a newly refurbished and modernised science laboratory on Friday, October 31.

The once-outdated facility has been transformed into a bright, fully equipped learning space, allowing pupils to conduct experiments and explore science in a safe and stimulating environment.

School principal Lonwabo Mbeke, along with teachers and pupils, could not hide their excitement as they stepped into the new laboratory for the first time.

Mr Mbeke said he was grateful to SANPC, saying the upgrade would inspire more students to develop an interest in science and pursue careers in technology, engineering, and related fields.

Representative Council of Learners president Somila Mara described the occasion as a "momentous one", reminding her peers that the laboratory is “not just a playground but a place to explore the wonders of science.”

She said the facility would help close the gap between Siphamandla and better-resourced schools. “This is a dream come true for our teachers. Let us embrace it with enthusiasm. We can now do almost anything here,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of SANPC, Dladlakazi Ntloko said the project forms part of the company’s corporate social investment programme, which focuses on supporting education and community development across South Africa.

“We want resources that are used,” she said. “This lab should not stand idle. It is a space where we want to see future engineers and scientists emerge. When results come in 2026, we want to see positive outcomes.”

SANPC’s Jacky Mashapu said that the investment represents the company’s commitment to equity and empowerment.

“Khayelitsha is one of the largest townships and still lacks many resources and infrastructure,” he said. “Through this project, we are ensuring that pupils here are not left behind. By empowering youth through STEM, we are investing in innovation.”

Representing the department of education, circuit manager Noloyiso Mtimba-Dube expressed her gratitude to SANPC for choosing Siphamandla High School.

“There may have been many schools to choose from, but by God’s grace, SANPC came to Siphamandla,” she said.

“This is a dream realised for our teachers, learners, and parents. We believe this resource will not only improve results but also uplift the entire Khayelitsha community. We encourage the school to share its success with other schools that have fewer resources.”
