More than 100 young girls from Gugulethu and nearby communities gathered at the J.L. Zwane Centre on Saturday, November 8, for an inspiring Girls’ Dialogue to Empower event hosted by Manata Community Projects (MCP).

Themed “Life is About Choices,” the event aimed to encourage young women to reflect on the decisions that shape their futures and to believe in their power to rise above life’s challenges.

With a focus on real-life challenges that affect many young women, the gathering created a space to talk openly about issues such as substance abuse, peer pressure, gender-based violence, and the lack of access to mentorship and positive role models.

Founder and coordinator of MCP, Sharon Mimi Manata, said the dialogue was part of the organisation’s ongoing mission to build confident, resilient, and goal-driven young women.

“Many of our girls are growing up in environments where they face difficult choices daily,” she said. “This event was about showing them that their future is in their hands, that their choices matter, and that they have the strength to rise above their circumstances.”

The event was supported by the City of Cape Town, the Department of Health, SAPS, Pad a Girl, Thetha, and the No Excuse Campaign.

With contributions from local businesses and donors, the girls received meals, wellness packs, and refreshments throughout the programme.

“Together, we reminded these girls that they are seen, loved, and capable of great things,” said Ms Manata.

A highlight of the day was a visit from influencer Zuki Lamani, who captivated the audience with her story and heartfelt advice. She urged the girls to value themselves, make wise decisions, and believe in their dreams despite life’s challenges.

Guest speakers included representatives from the Film and Publication Board, led by Nomvuyiso Fanishe, who spoke about online safety, responsible digital behaviour, and self-leadership.

The Girls’ Dialogue to Empower forms part of MCP’s mission to create inclusive and supportive spaces for young women.
