Khayelitsha District Hospital (KDH) unveiled its revitalised Mother’s Lounge Mental Health Ward on Wednesday, November 12, offering a dedicated space to support women seeking healing and renewed emotional strength.

The initiative was made possible through the generosity of the Friends of Khayelitsha District Hospital and their donor, a long-established and well-known fashion retailer.

Speaking at the launch, Kade Wade from Friends of KDH said the project aims to empower women who face growing challenges such as stress, loneliness, and loss of motivation. These issues have become increasingly common in today’s fast-paced world.

“We’re very excited to finally launch this project,” said Ms Wade.

“In addition to the lounge, we’re also introducing a kitchen space, a home away from home where mothers can relax and feel comfortable. This is the first project we’ve been able to implement for the Mental Health Unit for some time, and we’re truly delighted.”

The launch was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the provincial government, community leaders, and healthcare professionals, all united in their commitment to improving mental health and community well-being.

Dr Ayche Martin, clinical manager and acting CEO of KDH, said the new ward embraces a holistic approach that combines philosophy, therapy, and community engagement to help women rebuild confidence and resilience.

“We are deeply grateful to our donors and Friends of KDH for helping us enhance the environment for our patients,” Dr Martin said.

“Mental healthcare is not only about clinical and nursing care — the environment plays a crucial role too. This improvement brings dignity and comfort to our patients, helping them heal faster and feel better during their stay.”

Operational manager Bonginkosi Mweli thanked the donors for their continued support and emphasised the importance of tackling the stigma surrounding mental health in local communities. He assured guests that the new space would be well used and maintained.

Seipati Moloto, representing the fashion retailer, said the company was proud to partner with KDH on a project that aligns with its core values around health and community support.

“Many of us didn’t grow up knowing about mental health,” Moloto reflected. “Only recently have our communities begun recognising the importance of caring for those struggling with mental health issues. This partnership is very meaningful to us, and we will continue to support such initiatives wherever possible.”
