Gugulethu police reservist Nokuzola Nkonyana recently received a heartening show of support from her colleagues, who came together to provide her with groceries during a difficult period.

The initiative was led by the station’s Women’s Network.

The station's spokesperson, Constable Nomapha Homane, said the idea came from an understanding of the challenging circumstances faced by reservists, who are not salaried.

She added that the network specifically chose Ms Nkonyana, known for her tireless work ethic, because of the personal difficulties she is currently experiencing at home. Ms Nkonyana is widely regarded as a dedicated and hardworking member of the team at the station.

“With the 16 Days of Activism around the corner, we as the Women’s Network thought of this programme as a way to give back to one of our own,” said Constable Homane.

“We chose her because we know the challenges she is dealing with. Charity begins at home, so we believed it was only right to support her with groceries. We have other activities planned for the 16 Days of Activism, but this one is special.”

Women’s Network chairperson, Lusanda Malunga, said the initiative was prompted by Ms Nkonyana’s deeply personal circumstances. She explained that Ms Nkonyana has been struggling with a troublesome son who is on substance abuse and often needs financial resources to manage the situation.

“We wanted to assist because she carries a heavy load, and reservists do not earn a fixed salary. They are only paid when called out, and that money is not enough,” Ms Malunga said.

“We are happy we could help, and we believe she feels the same.”

A visibly moved Ms Nkonyana said she was shocked when her colleagues arrived with bags of groceries. The mother of two said the help came at exactly the right moment, as she had been facing personal difficulties.

“This is the best thing my colleagues could have done for me,” she said.

“I had spoken to one of them about my situation, but I never expected anything like this. When they walked in with groceries, I was speechless. I am still lost for words.”

She added that the little money she earns will now go toward addressing pressing issues involving one of her children.
