The City of Cape Town will host festive lights switch-on events in Langa and Mitchell's Plain this December.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is scheduled to switch on the lights at both events.
In Langa, the switch-on will take place along King Langalibalele Drive and Church Street on Tuesday, December 2, from 4pm until 9pm.
Mitchell's Plain will hold its switch-on event on Friday, December 5, from 4pm until 9pm, marking the return of the event after a 10-year hiatus.
The Mitchell's Plain switch-on, first held in 2006, will take place on Morgenster Road in front of Westridge Garden, between De Duin Avenue and Victory Drive. Next year, the area will mark its 50th anniversary.
Both events will feature performances by local artists and entertainers, as well as food stalls.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said: “I’m excited to join the Langa and Mitchell's Plain communities for these upcoming festive light switch-on celebrations. This is a special year as we expand the joy of these events beyond the City’s main CBD to bring festive cheer right to the heart of the Mitchell's Plain and Langa communities."
"Please bring your family and friends along for these joyous open-air events to ring in the festive season in our city of hope,” he said.
The festive lights installations will use energy-efficient 1-watt bulbs, which consume less electricity than conventional 60- or 15-watt incandescent lamps, he said.
Road closures will be in place for both events.
In Langa, King Langalibalele Drive between Church Street and Mendi Avenue will close in both directions from 9am on Tuesday, December 2, reopening at midnight. In Mitchell's Plain, Morgenster Road between Dagbreek and De Duin avenues will be closed from 9am on Friday, December 5 until 12am on Saturday, December 6.
Updates on performing artists for both events will be shared via the City of Cape Town’s social media channels.
