Joy filled the air at Isikhokelo Primary School on Tuesday, January 27, as pupils received brand new school uniforms from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
The donation not only restored pride and dignity among the pupils but also eased the financial burden on families already under pressure. A total of 39 pupils benefited from the initiative.
The school's deputy principal, Ntombekhaya Nkqai, said the gesture would leave a lasting impact on the children’s lives. She emphasised that wearing a school uniform instils dignity, pride, and confidence, which in turn inspires better academic performance and reduces social anxiety among pupils.
“Sassa has put a crown on the heads of our children. This is something that will stay with them forever. They have made a mark that will never fade. We are truly grateful,” she said.
Addressing pupils, teachers, and parents during the handover, Metro District Senior Manager Ananias Kgare thanked the school management and staff for their commitment to their responsibilities. He also expressed appreciation to parents for caring for their children.
“We are happy that you can see how Sassa can help relieve your stress. I am very pleased to see parents and teachers working together to take care of our children. They are our future leaders. Thank you for nurturing them,” said Mr Kgare.
He added that the agency aims to ensure that no child is left behind and reaffirmed Sassa’s commitment to supporting needy children and families. Mr Kgare further encouraged pupils to take their education seriously so that they can one day enjoy the freedom and opportunities that come with being educated.
Although the school applied for uniforms for 50 pupils, only 39 qualified as recipients. Khayelitsha Sassa assistant director Freddie Sidali explained that strict criteria had to be followed, and that some applications did not fully meet the requirements.
He encouraged the school to reapply with corrected information.
“We are here to improve the plight of our people. A significant amount of money was spent to purchase these uniforms through our Social Relief of Distress fund. Our mission is to restore dignity and confidence in children. We do not want to leave anyone behind,” he said.
The agency spent R5 550 per girl and R5 350 per boy, bringing the total amount spent at Isikhokelo Primary School to R208 650. Mr Sidali also said that Sassa’s next programme would involve bringing together all 12 ward councillors, each of whom would be asked to identify two schools and 50 needy pupils to benefit from future uniform donations.
Parent Noluthando Cukula thanked both the agency and the school, noting that many parents in Site C are unemployed.
“These uniforms have brought great relief to parents. This is God’s grace working through Sassa officials and school teachers to ensure our children are properly dressed. It is now our responsibility to make sure our children wear and respect their uniforms. On behalf of all parents, I am grateful,” she said.
