Kasi Riders Motorcycle Club reacted with vavavoom to the plight of Nompucuko Seniors’ Club in Khayelitsha on Saturday August 17 by organising them food and other goodies.
The bikers responded to call a by a concerned resident that these seniors have nothing much to eat when they meet at the South African Christian Leadership Assembly (SACLA), building in Khayelitsha.
In response, the bikers surprised them, arriving with a big bang and bikes laden with all sorts of goodies.
Kasi Riders’ Papinki Lebeleo said after that cal it was clear they had to do something, even if it was small.
“After a certain lady by the name of Lulama alerted us of their plight, our reaction was to respond to it very quickly. We decided to arrive unannounced and surprise them. They got a shock of their lives to hear the big sounds of the bikers. They told us that their sugar levels were tested and some sky-rocketed,” he chuckled.
“But the good thing was that, after we told them who we are, they welcomed us with open arms and were happy with what we brought,” he said.
He added that the 30 seniors were filled with cheer as they also enjoyed a performance from the bikers. They were treated to lunch and received parcels to take home as well as goods they will keep at the building.
“We want them to have something while busy with their programmes at the building. We have also asked them to give us a list of things they would need and we will look at that list and see what we can do. We are doing a lot of charities, including some of the creches that we adopted, but we promise to go back some other time,” Mr Lebeleo told Vukani.
An overwhelmed Nobelithemba Lupuwana-Ngcoyoyo said she had no words to express her excitement.
She said very few people visited to help.
“We are grateful for the surprise. They showed us great care and love for us. This is one act of support that will live on in our hearts. This is one great Saturday for us all. On behalf of all of us here at Nompucuko, we really appreciate the gifts we got. I can only say kwande apho bathathe khona.”
She said the seniors were usually forgotten but the day proved to them that they are not forgotten as seniors of that community.
Club chairperson Nomvula Sobekwa said the club had only been registered with the Department of Social Development in June this year and that it operates from Monday to Friday.
She said it gives the seniors the chance to participate in physical activities, knitting bags and jerseys and recylcing.
“We have no government assistance or funding. We have to dig deep into our pockets for certain things. We were really happy to see these guys with such a help. We are grateful to them and to whoever recommended us to them,” said Ms Sobekwa.Â
