Crime weary residents have blocked Thandi Modise Crescent in Makhaya after a spate of burglaries in the area.
Residents say the robberies are committed by thugs in vehicles so they blocked the road with large yellow concrete blocks.
The move has caused a lot of unhappiness because motorists says the illegal barricade is an inconveniences.
On resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the barricade was creating havoc on weekends.
“We cannot drive here because this street is home to a popular shebeen, Room 8 Tavern, and driving here becomes a nightmare,” he said.
Ward councillor Mthwalo Mkhutswana said he was approached by community leaders who told him of their plans to close the road.
“I was categorically clear to them that city by-laws will not allow such action. It is a matter that law enforcement will have to deal with,” said Mr Mkhutswana.
Mayco member for water, Zahid Badroodien, said the installation of such a blockade is illegal.
