A heart-broken Crossroads mother is calling for Nyanga police station to do their job and get justice for her four-year-old daughter who was allegedly raped by her neighbour’s boyfriend on Wednesday February 14.
The 32-year-old mother said when she undressed her daughter in the evening she noticed unusual stains on her daughter’s underwear.
She asked the child if anything had happened and it never crossed her mind that someone might have attempted to rape her.
But she quickly noted that her daughter’s interaction and mood changed when she asked about the stains.
She said her daughter told her that she had been playing with her neighbour’s child at their home after she came back from school.
The friend’s mother allegedly left the child with her boyfriend and that is when the incident occurred.
“I asked her if someone tried to undress her and she said yes. She told me when he inserted the penis, she cried and that is when he stopped. I cried upon hearing this and I then immediately rushed to Nyanga police station to open a case of rape.
“The doctor’s results came back stating that indeed there was penetration. Shockingly the police informed me that this person is not going to be arrested and gave me very vague reasons.
“But because my sister has got a decent following on Facebook she interacted with different people who then came forward to support us and the guy was then arrested a day or two after the incident. He did appear in court I was told because on that day he appeared we were taken to see a social worker.
“Ever since then I have not received any information with regards to the case until now today.
“Instead of receiving justice for my daughter, the guy has opened a protection order case against me as if I’m assaulting or humiliating him.
“I feel sad and this is quite depressing and I feel that Nyanga police officers are failing my daughter and me.”
The mother said she feels betrayed and not taken seriously by the Nyanga police station and ever since the incident her daughter has not been the same.
Nyanga Vispol head commander Lieutenant Colonel Wynand Muller, informed Vukani that a case had been opened at the station and the accused did appear in court but the case was struck off the court roll. However, he said the detectives were working hard in ensuring that the case is reinstated.
Siyabulela Monakali, spokesperson for Ilitha Labantu, an organisation which supports women and children affected by violence, advised the mother to make contact with them.
