Durbanville organisations help Khayelitsha flood victims
The Village Action Network, a non-profit company, and Durbanville Lions Club joined forces with a church leader and school teacher to bring relief to flood victims in Khayelitsha this week.
Village Action Network’s director, Janessa Stockhall, said Gene Louw Primary School teacher Yolandi Oliver and Durbanville Lions Club president Danielle Cronje came together with a church leader to make the project a success.
She said they donated 30 food parcels, 67 blankets, many towels and clothes on Monday.
“We were able to take three vehicles packed to the brim with food relief, blankets and clothing to the delight of a community in Site B, Khayelitsha,” she said.
The donation came after Siphokazi Khumalo, the founder of New Home Church, which is based in Khayelitsha, called for help after she saw a need in the community.
Ms Khumalo, who stays in Rondebosch, said she also contributed what she could raise and that 65 families benefited from their project.
“So basically this one Saturday I was doing my usual training in the church and then because it's been raining and it's been flooding I asked my students if they were fine.
“One lady told me that she was affected, her house was flooded and a whole lot of them were affected in that same area. I was very troubled by that and I just knew that I needed to do something. I did not know what it was going to be, but I just knew that I needed to help her.”
She sent an appeal to the schools where her church children go and on Facebook, and Ms Stockhall responded to her Facebook post.
Site B community leadere Sibusiso Ndudula expressed gratitude for the donations.
