Harare police arrested three men and a woman following a tip-off from a concerned shop owner who had received a letter of demand for a “protection fee”.
Harare SAPS spokesman Captain Siyabulela Vukubi said police were informed about firearms stored at 34 block in Harare.
“On arrival our members searched the house and found an AK47 rifle with 46 rounds, a 9mm pistol with 11 rounds, four cellphones and two vending machines that they immediately seized,” said Vukubi.
He said while searching the house they found typed notes which were a final reminder to business owners that the protection fees would increase from the end of February.
“In addition to charges of possessing prohibited firearms and ammunition, and possession of stolen property, they will now be investigated for involvement in the extortion rackets,” said Vukubi.
They will appear at Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday March 8.
