Health centre hosts awareness session at Manyano High
In an effort to educate pupils about HIV, TB and mental health issues, the Michael Mapongwana community health centre held an informative two-hour session at Manyano High School on Friday June 15.
Lungisani Mani, a professional nurse from Michael Mapongwana community health centre, said through such platforms they wanted pupils to share their stories in a safe space to a caring adult and deal with any trauma they may have suffered.
He said they had been running these programmes for years now and what makes them happy is the level of participation from the pupils.
The pupils’ responses during the programmes also help the health staff learn how the youth view certain topics.
“We want to build young people who are not afraid to raise their frustrations and challenges and who are able to step forward and get help.
“We must create young people who want to make wise decisions about their health and education.
“We cannot any longer not create a platform for our children to talk about TB and HIV and other topics which are considered taboo.
“We want to effect change through such programmes,” he said.
Mr Mani said the programme is run annually but he wanted to see it being hosted at least twice a year.
Pupil Ayolisayo Amahle Matinise said the programme tackled many issues such as gender-based violence.
The Grade 9 pupil said such programmes were important as they allow them as pupils to share their understanding of the issues in a safe space without fear of being judged.
