“Education is important and every locked door is opened by it.”
This is what Sizimilele high school teacher, Nolusindiso Mgca, told pupils at a career expo at Kuyasa library on Friday April 19.
She believes the expo could help them prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
Among the exhibitors at the expo were various City of Cape Town fire departments and Harare police station.
The library teemed with pupils from the several schools who asked the exhibitors tough questions. Acting Principal Librarian at Kuyasa library, Vuyokazi Njambathwa, believes that education is a powerful driver for development and one of the strongest instruments for reducing poverty.
Informed by trends and marketplace demands, she said the expo aimed at steering pupils towards careers in scarce and critical skills fields, such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), librarians, finance and health.
She believes that to further their studies, they must know that universities are a different ball game.
“So this expo will help them make comprehensive research to determine which career choice they want, what are the requirements for studying at that university or college and how much it will cost.”
She said it was critical that they started planning now to attain the right admission point score and get bursaries.
“We want them to have an idea, and to know how to apply for those careers,” she said adding that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was among the exhibitors.
“Many of our young people lack information, we want them to access information and share it with others. We are taking small steps to build a better society,” she said.
Grade 10 pupil, Siyolise Mahanjana said he has learnt a lot from the expo and feels motivated and ready to conquer his school work and chase his dreams.
