An ambitious Khayelitsha boy has dreams of playing football at the highest level.
Athenkosi Matukwana’s dream is to play for Orlando Pirates, Bafana Bafana and any international team.
Athi, as he is known in football circles, will have a chance to represent Y2K Football Club through the Gareth Ncaca Youth Foundation, in an exchange programme in Sweden where he will play at a high-level performance tournament in June.
But while Athi and his family are excited about this opportunity, they worry they will not be able to raise the funds for the trip, accommodation and food.
For the 19-year-old footballer to see his dream fulfilled, he and his family must raise R35 000.
His mother Nomsa said she was over the moon that her child had such an opportunity and they were doing everything they could to raise the money.
“We are not sitting on our laurels hoping something will come out of the blue, we are trying all we can so that he can realise his dream. We would appreciate any support, no amount is too little.”
She said her son loves his sport and they would love to see him succeed.
Talking to Vukani, Athi said his family had been having sleepless nights to make sure that his dream is realised. The speedy winger commended his family for doing all they could to raise funds for him.
“I am excited to have an opportunity to showcase my talent overseas with other great young talents from the province. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I would not like to miss. But my stumbling block for now is money. I am not from a rich family. Funds are standing between me and my dream.”
Athi has been a footballer since the age of 8. He matriculated from Siphamandla High School last year.
“My dream is to play for my favourite team Pirates and make it to the national team, Bafana Bafana. That would be the best achievement of my life,” he said.
