More than 150 matrics from various schools had a chance to think about what their futures might look like, during a career expo at the Philippi East library, last Friday.
The pupils – many of whom came from Vuyiseka, Phakama, Phandulwazi and Philippi high schools – visited stalls where they met people from a range of professions and representatives from institutions of higher learning.
The expo was necessary, said librarian Lawrence Mkentane, because many matrics still had no idea what they wanted to do after leaving high school.
“We hope to provide them with knowledge of various career paths and funding opportunities post matric, and trust that with this knowledge they will be able to make informed decisions when choosing their career.”
It was important for pupils wishing to further their studies to know which universities or colleges they wanted to go to, he said.
Trudy Mashilwane, regional outreach officer from the National Youth Development Agency, invited the matrics to approach the agency to learn how to prepare for the world of work, including putting a CV together. It was vital to start planning now if they hoped to apply for a job or entry into a college or university, she said.
Apart from the agency, other exhibitors included UWC, False Bay College, the City of Cape Town, SAPS, Beautiful Gate non-profit organisation, fashion designers, an IT company, a salon and a large retail chain.
Pupils who spoke to Vukani said they had learned about the pressures of higher learning and facing the real world on their own.
