Khayelitsha police and various community groups met at OR Tambo Indoor Centre on Thursday November 7 to hold a prayer against crime, ahead of the festive season, which is traditionally a busy time for the police. “Our operational plan for the festive season has already kick-started, and we work with other law enforcement agencies,” said police chief Brigadier Khuthala Masakala. Monde Bambelo, chairperson of the Khayelitsha Community Police Forum, said it was wrong for the public to blame the police for not doing anything if they weren't prepared to report crime. He urged the community to reclaim its streets from criminals. Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) chairman Nceba Enge said their members would patrol various areas to ensure taxi drivers obeyed the rules of the road. He said they were aware of taxi drivers who had been taking their passengers to a secluded part of Mandalay and robbing them there, and the association was working hard to find the culprits and hand them over to the police.
