Ward 87 councillor Khayalethu Khama and community leaders rolled up their sleeves to fix fencing, remove rubbish and plant some trees at Cwangco Park in Cwango Street in Site C.
Mr Khama said for years the park has been continuously vandalised, often soon after repairs were made, robbing children of the opportunity of enjoying the benefits of having a park in their area.
Mr Khama said the park had been in bad condition for about four years now.
“Our children were forced to go to other communities to enjoy a playground while they have it in their community,” he said.
Mr Khama said he would approach the City officials who are responsible for the maintenance of parks and look at various strategies to safeguard the site.
The park was temporarily closed for the work to be done.
Community leader, Viwe Martins, said as residents and leaders they needed to start taking ownership of their community including their communal spaces.
