Two men are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday January 23, in connection with the rape of a 12-year-old boy in Gugulethu last month.
Seven men were accused of the crime but two, aged 45 and 55, were arrested and appeared at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on January 8. The case was remanded to today.
According to the boy’s guardian, he had attended a wedding ceremony in the neighbourhood on the morning of December 15.
The guardian said she was alerted by people from the family hosting the wedding that some terrible had happened to their son.
“They told me that my son returned walking awkwardly after one of the accused males had driven with him to premises in NY1 opposite a petrol filling station. He said whilst there the men performed sexual act on him,” she said.
They allegedly gave him a R100 note with a warning not to tell anyone about what happened.
The case was filed with the Gugulethu police station and later transferred to Nyanga FCS for further investigation.
The boy was rushed to the Thuthuzela Centre in Manenberg where he underwent counselling and medical tests. His case was transferred to social workers at the Ilitha Labantu.
Police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk said investigations were continuing and confirmed that the two men would appear in court today.
Gugulethu Community Police forum spokesman Bishop Mfihlo said they had not heard of the case but were shocked when Vukani approached them for comment. He said they would be following it with interest.
