Community groups mourned last week with the family of Nomthetheleli Ngqola, the 67-year-old woman who was shot dead in broad daylight by two unknown gunmen at her Site B house.
Ms Ngqola was found dead just after 11am on September Friday 20.
Neighbours said two young men who had followed her as she had returned home from the shop had killed her before fleeing.
Members of Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids (GAPA) and the Khayelitsha Older Persons Forum gathered at Ms Ngqola’s house on Thursday last week.
Nikelwa Ngqola said she had received a text informing her what had happened and she had found her sister-in-law’s lifeless body lying next to her fridge.
The family had no idea why she was killed as she had had no enemies, she said.
“I have lost something dear to my heart. This woman was a member of GAPA, and I joined GAPA because of her. She was my chairlady at our burial society. We used to meet frequently because we were members of the same organisation and we are family.
“We are going to bury her in the Eastern Cape at our home village in Lady Frere. We are extremely sad and shocked with her passing, and we do not know how to heal.”
Khayelitsha police spokesperson Constable Asanda Daweti said the two gunmen had shot Ms Ngqola twice in the head and she had died at the scene.
Police were investigating a murder but no arrests had been made, she said.
A visibly shaken ward councillor, Thando Mpengesi, described Ms Ngqola as an outspoken and fearless woman who stood for nothing but the truth.
He said she had helped to guide young ANC members, teaching them leadership skills and had helped him become a ward councillor.
Elda Sidlabane, from GAPA, described Ms Ngqola as someone who had made others happy; a people person who was loved by all.
