Congratulations to Patrice Motsepe for being elected CAF president unopposed and bringing hope to footballers, football associations and fans.

The first thing Motsepe must do is to unite African football. His ascendance to Africa’s football throne means CAF will for the first time have an English-speaking president.

Motsepe commands great respect and ticks all the boxes. Seemingly, South Africa is doing well on the continent.

Ten years ago we delivered Africa’s first world cup. For the first time in CAF’s 65 years, the country has produced an African football president.

In recent decades Fifa, the football controlling body, has been plagued by corruption allegations, with former president Ahmad Ahmad initially banned for five years for misdemeanours while in power. We hope that Motsepe’s reign will help clear up the dark cloud that has hovered over the regulatory body.

African football needs collective wisdom.
