In a world that sometimes feels like it's spinning faster than ever, it’s essential to pause, look back, and celebrate the enduring legacies that shape our communities.
Right in the middle of Gugulethu, Real Ideas Football Club, better known as #DlalaMdiyezo, once thrived at street soccer — playing from late afternoon until 2am. The club has evolved into a beacon of hope for both young and old.
Last Friday, at the Gugulethu sports complex, the club paid tribute to its rich history.
Under the guidance of its current club executive, Xolisa Sonti, and hosted by Mzimkhulu Mjiwu, the anniversary event unfolded, drawing in the community with stories of their history.
Real Ideas Football Club had a line-up of distinguished guest speakers, including the lifetime president, Mthuthuzeli Nombewu, elder Mzonke Sithole, Reverend Phatho, Ricky Jacobs, and a mother at the club, Selina Peter.
The club's journey has evolved into a force for good in Gugulethu. Currently participating in the Gugulethu Local Football Association, they are set on expanding their horizons to encompass many of the city's youth and amateur flagship tournaments. Their goal is clear: to provide opportunities for the youth of ny115, ny108, ny142, and the broader Gugulethu community, nurturing talent and transforming lives along the way.
Amidst the cheers and applause, Real Ideas Football Club's management expressed its gratitude to its sponsors and supporters.
“I would like to thank the founding members of this magnificent institution and everyone that has contributed throughout the years. Going forward, we envision a club that will serve as a medium to accelerate holistic development by aligning our club’s programme with the strategic CSI objectives of relevant stakeholders,” said Sonti.
Mr Nombewu said the club, born from a simple game, had grown into a symbol of hope, unity, and the power of sports to transform lives.
“Here's to another 50 years of making dreams come true in Gugulethu, one kick at a time.”
