Every walk into the ring is a step closer to a dream, and dreams do come true.
This is the driving philosophy of Kaya Mlata, whose boxing career currently boasts a flawless 6-0 record with four of those victories secured by stoppage.
The Khayelitsha-based junior featherweight star is diligently sharpening his skills, preparing for another ring walk at Cabo Beach in a card titled Fight Island 2.0.
While a boxing event maintains a sharp focus on in-ring action, Mlata acknowledges the unique atmosphere of the Cabo Beach venue.
It has a distinct vibe that blends sport and entertainment, thus creating an electric atmosphere for both fighters and fans.
Saturday April 26 promises to deliver another thrilling weekend for fight fans, with Mlata playing a major role in entertaining the crowd.
His last outing at the same venue was a comfortable decision victory over Siboniso Gonya after eight rounds of boxing.
"Cabo Beach brings a new experience and fresh energy because of the atmosphere. It’s a special place to compete, it's an amazing experience," said Mlata.
This time, he faces a seasoned campaigner, Sabelo Ngebinyana, for the WC Junior Featherweight title.
Mlata remains composed regarding his career progression, showing patience as he believes he's on the right path, with significant achievements on the horizon.
"I'm putting in the work to gain experience and sharpen my skills. When the opportunity comes, I'll be ready for it," he stated when questioned about potential title fights.
"I'm not rushing. But when the time is right, I'll take the shot and I'll be ready."
His self-assuredness and aspirations for major titles, however, should not be mistaken for a disregard for his immediate opponent, Ngebinyana.
"Yes, I'm fighting a guy who's been around. I respect his experience, at the end of the day it's just me and him in the ring, and this is the opportunity to show my skills and prove I belong at this level. I have to show him that I'm the future," Mlata said.
This stance aligns with his ambitious long-term goals. He sees himself competing for major titles and exchanging blows with the best South Africa has to send his way.
However, he remains grounded and stresses the importance of focusing on one fight at a time. As the adage goes, "good things take time, and time is what it takes to make amazing things".
His bout against Ngebinyana will be his second scheduled 10-round fight, although he is yet to reach that distance.
The event will be headlined by an international middleweight clash between Dean Promnick and Kudakwache Banda.
Kaya Mlata looks to stamp his authority in the boxing ring.
