Learners from schools in Philippi ended the year by hosting an award ceremony to reward their top performers. The event was held a month ago and the football and netball teams recognised at the event range from the under-8s to under-19s.

The games have been running for four years now and play from May to November each year, with the vision being to promote a healthy play lifestyle for  Philippi kids.

The clubs taking part are led by volunteers made up of ordrinary adults with unordinary compassion for the safety of children and of course, a big love for the sport.

Many lead coaches are unemployed or between jobs while juggling evening and nighttime fixtures, as well as the league’s busy Friday and Saturday full day events.

The league fixtures are hosted at Vuyiseka Secondary School fields or Beautiful Gate’s site, and the clubs would also be playing in an open space available to them, at times next to the highway or any field they can find.
