Grassy Park United have made their intentions loud and clear in the ABC Motsepe League, signalling that they are mounting a serious challenge for a coveted play-off place this season.
Mangaliso “Shakes” Ntombana, coach of the title-chasing side from the Southern Suburbs, was all smiles after his team produced a convincing 3-0 win over Ammar Soccer Academy at the William Herbert Sportsground in Wynberg over the weekend. The result not only boosted confidence within the camp, but also set the tone ahead of a mouth-watering Group B encounter against log leaders Diadora.
Ntombana’s tactical acumen was on full display as his side dominated proceedings against Ammar, controlling the tempo and capitalising on their chances. Goals from Waseem George, Jody Claasen, and Valentino Fredericks sealed a deserved victory that underlined the team’s growing maturity and ambition.
The win leaves United just two points behind Diadora, who top the standings with 16 points from six matches, adding extra spice to their upcoming clash. For Ntombana, the meeting carries personal significance, having coached Diadora to Coke Cup success in 2023.
“We are ready to make Grassy Park a serious contender for the title. There is still a long way to go, but we expect a serious challenge this season. The key for us is to stay grounded and focused on what we need to do each week,” said Ntombana.
Grassy Park’s recent form suggests they are gaining momentum, with a solid defensive structure complemented by an increasingly potent attack. Their growing belief will be tested against Diadora, a side that has set the pace in Group B and remains unbeaten.
Elsewhere, Santos marked their long-awaited return to competitive action following a protracted legal battle that had seen the legendary club suspended by the league. Under the guidance of former Bafana Bafana midfielder Bradley August, Santos wasted little time reminding observers of their pedigree, recording an emphatic 3-0 victory over Vasco da Gama at Parow Park.
In Group A, FN Rangers continue to lead the charge at the top of the table, with Hanover Park firmly in pursuit. The Brasse of the Park sit on 13 points, three adrift of Rangers, as the battle for supremacy in the group intensifies.
With the league entering a crucial phase, momentum is beginning to build, and teams such as Grassy Park United are ensuring they remain firmly in the hunt for honours come season’s end.
