The late Sipho Malotana
Veteran educator and former rugby player, Sipho Malotana, 84, from Goodwood, passed away last week after a battle with kidney cancer.
Malotana was born in Johannesburg in 1936. He stayed in Gugulethu and Langa in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He then moved to Johannesburg, Swaziland and Butterworth, before his return to Cape Town in 1995.
He completed his matric at Langa High, his junior certificate at Lovedale College, in Alice, and his BA Degree at Fort Hare University. He also obtained a variety of certificates while at the university.
He taught mathematics at Langa High as an assistant teacher and worked at Stellenbosch farmers winery.
When he moved to Johannesburg, he taught mathematics to matrics in Tembisa and then became the Head of Mathematics at Mhlatane High School, at Piggs Peak, in Swaziland.
Malotana is the former deputy principal at Lamplough High School in Butterworth.
After three years, he was promoted and became a fully-fledged principal at Maboboti High School in Centane. He served there until he retired.
Malotana married his Lovedale lover, Kholiwe Dlamini. They raised four children, Yoliswa, Eric, Andile and Mbulelo, as well as grandchildren, Thandi and Asanda. His sisters are Bukelwa and Nonceba.
His son, Andile Malotana said his father imparted knowledge and wisdom, and they would listen affectionately to the stories he told.
“He was an avid sports person at Fort Hare and at Lovedale College. Over the past 20 years he was very much into church. He liked to help people and to preach,” he said
“My father said for us to have a place in society, we must be educated. He was also family oriented.
“Ulufezile ugqatso (the race is accomplished). He did the best he could do, let’s allow him to rest. We are happy for the support shown by friends and family,” said Malotana.
Summer Greens resident Pat Jayiya said Malotana was a smart dresser and a soft spoken gentleman. He would always relate stories about his days at Lovedale and Fort Hare.
“He was a person who loved education, especially maths. His love for education and sport took him around the country, and outside the country to Swaziland. When he returned to SA he became the deputy and principal for a couple of schools,” she said.
Church leader at Christ Embassy, Mzukisi Moses Ngaba said Malotana was dedicated to change around Parow and Goodwood.
“On December 7th and every Christmas he would lead his church to give back to the homeless. He would give cakes, clothes, food parcels and ensure they enjoy Christmas like everybody. He was a very humble man and a leader,” said Ngaba.
Malotana will be laid to rest on Friday January 22.
The funeral will be live streamed between 10am and noon on Zoom and Facebook.
