Liverpool- Portland advanced to the round of 32 of Safa Cape Towns’ Coca-Cola Amateur Cup competition.
Playing in driving rain at the Rooikrans sports ground in Grassy Park on Sunday, the Mitchell’s Plain outfit beat Island Rovers 1-0 in a closely contested affair after Taahir Ganga pounced on a mistake in the Rovers defence to slot home the winner.
They will now face Montague Spurs of Cape District in the next round. Spurs edged out Atlantis Leeds United at the Solo Street sports ground in Steenberg.
Liverpool-Portland coach, Faizel Adams, is however, cautiously optimistic of his side’s chance in the next round. “It was a tough match, we took our chances and we now look forward to our match in the next round. This team has been together for the past three seasons and we are determined to bring success to the club,” said Adams.
Liverpool Portland is also gunning for the Mitchell’s Plain LFA’s league honours and is presently in second place on the standings.
Meanwhile, the local South Peninsula LFA derby encounter between Lavender Hill and Azzuri ended in controversy when the referee blew off the match with 12 minutes of play left. Azzuri were leading 3-1 when the match was ended due to an alleged insulting remark made at the referee.
