Pupils from schools across the province observed national Mother Tongue Language day last week.

The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) hosted an IsiXhosa Grade 4 spelling competition at the Iziko South African Museum last Thursday to mark International Mother Language Day, together with the Western Cape Department of Education, University of Cape Town and Iziko Museum.

The Grade 4 pupils qualified for the competition through an elimination process which saw 60, schools taking part ahead of this event.

The top five pupils won iPads and school bags.

Pupils went home with certificates after the event. Schools from Langa, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Mfuleni were among those which took part.
