Teaching was brought to a standstill at Marcus Garvey's Zanemfundo Primary School after a group of armed men entered the school on Friday and demanded a protection fee.
On Monday, parents did not send their children to school fearing for their lives.
A parent who contacted Vukani on condition of anonymity said teachers were shocked and scared after the incident.
"We immediately dispatched a WhatsApp message to all parents informing them about what happened and those available immediately collected their children," said the parent.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed the incident.
"The WCED has reported the matter to the police. Sadly, as a result of this intimidation and threats, schooling has been disrupted, and the WCED has requested police presence at the school."
Ms Hammond said they cannot allow a small group of individuals to unlawfully threaten teachers and schools.
"These kinds of demands are simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Our schools do not pay protection fees and will not accede to such demands or threats made by any individual or group. Extortion has no place in our schools and teaching and learning cannot be disrupted by criminals in this manner."
Zukisa Sophazi, area proportional councillor serving in a combined special portfolio committee meeting of urban mobility, safety and security and economic growth, said he was not fully briefed about the incident but confirmed schooling was disrupted on Monday.
"We are observing the situation and will comment fully once we grasp the situation," he said.
Captain FC Van Wyk said they have no record of the incident and would investigate once they get more information.
