Isilimela Secondary School in Langa unveiled their new sports field last Friday, February 28.
Principal Thobeka Dlali said she was proud to be at the helm during this milestone as the school had never had a sports field before.
She said sport was an integral part of education.
“This will bring an opportunity to our athletes to allow them to shine. The field will also benefit the community of Langa. This is where friends will be made and dreams pursued. Let it be a place where talent is nurtured,” she said.
The field and kit were donated by the Sobambisana and Asla construction companies.
Werner Jorling, chief executive officer of Asla, said it was delighted to have made a contribution to the community of Langa.
Mr Jorling said the field will not only be a place for children to play but it will also unite the community.
“This will make a difference to all. I am aware that you have been dreaming of having a facility of this sort. What makes us more happy is that Isilimela will now be able to host other teams."
He urged the community to look after the sports field well. “This is their facility that they need to take care off. We must thank the people who are looking after it because it is greener. That is the promise that it is under good hands,” said Mr Jorling.
Ward 52 councillor Thembelani Nyamakazi was not at the event but sent a message to thank the donors. He said the sports field would also help to fight crime in his ward. He said this was the only side of Langa which had never had such a facility before. Like all those who spoke, he urged the school and those who will be using the field to take good care of it.
