Enkandla community leader gunned down

Residents of Enkandla informal settlement in Khayelitsha are reeling in shock after one of their community leaders was shot multiple times while she was preparing to do her laundry at her home on Monday, April 14.

Ngcobisa Kana, 30, was area secretary general of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) and a community liaison officer (CLO) for the electrification shacks projects in her area.

When Vukani arrived at the scene at approximately 11am, an hour after the incident, community leaders and family members had gathered around her shack. Somewere visibly shaken while others wept silently in disbelief. 

Vukani was unable to speak to the family as they were still too traumatised to speak to the media.

Harare police station spokesperson Warrant Officer Nosiphwo Mntengwane, said two unknown men shot the woman eight times before fleeing on foot.

She said three bullets hit her face and five others hit her head. The woman was preparing to do her washing while her husband and his brother were around the yard. However, the gunmen had waited for the husband and his brother to leave the area before they could ambush her. 

‘“No arrests have been made and the police have not yet established the motive behind the incident. We appeal to anyone who might have information about the shooting to let us know. This is a senseless attack on a harmless woman,” said Warrant Officer Mntengwane.

Ward councillor Lonwabo Mqina expressed his sadness about the incident and called for the police to leave no stone unturned in their search for the killers.

He said it was so sad to see a young woman brutally killed.

He described her as one of the most dedicated leaders in his ward who were always championing for service delivery and the betterment of her area.

He said no one has the right to take someone else's life no matter what dispute they are embroiled in. 

 A resident who asked not to be named said he was walking towards her house when he heard gunshots. He said when appeared at her house she saw her lying down in a pool of blood but he did not see the shooters. He said they were shocked about this incident and there were more questions than answers.
