Soccer players at Litha Primary School received new soccer kits on Friday, August 15.

The school, located in NY 48, was one of the beneficiaries of a mobile network operator’s Dream Bag initiative.

The company said the programme aims to inspire children to be more active and embrace sports. It selects schools across the country during an ongoing competition. The company stated that it also aims to improve the skills and focus of pupils through sport.

Lundi Mafani, Western Cape trade marketer, said some of the pupils might one day become professional players.

He said: “As a company, we are not only selling airtime and mobile phones; we are also giving back to our communities. We are here because of these communities, so we have to plough back. Litha is one of our beneficiaries. This is not the first school we have supported this year; we also have Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo in Milnerton. There is more to come as long as we are involved in sport.”

He said the Dream Bags programme has provided young people with opportunities to participate in sports activities, with investment going into creating a healthier youth generation.

The company invited sports figures from the Western Cape, including former midfielder Brent Carelse and defender Morgan Gould, who played for Jomo Cosmos, Kaizer Chiefs, and Stellenbosch. They encouraged the boys to prioritise education.

Mr Carelse said: “This kit is donated to you to sharpen your skills. But you must stay in school. If you stay in school, you will remain disciplined. Discipline is everything in life. We are where we are because we have been disciplined. You also need to remain humble; you will go far in life.”

Mr Gould thanked the teachers for their work in the community.

“As my colleague has said, you need to be disciplined. But your dedication shows. Respect goes a long way. Look after yourselves, stay in school, and stay focused. That will set you up for the rest of your life. Honour your teachers; they always do what is good for you. Life is hard, boys. Teachers, we do not thank you enough. Doctors come from your hands and everybody else. Thank you for your hard work.”

School principal Silulami Nkqezo welcomed the donation.

“Our children love sports. If you look at our trophy cabinet, it has never been empty. With this kit, they will be even more encouraged. We are grateful because we are merging sport and education. It is equally important to develop their talents.”

He said the school and pupils were committed to using the kit effectively and keeping it clean. He said many children would benefit from it.
