I am so relieved , that finally learners in our schools are protected by the gazetting of the regulations banning teachers and non-teaching staff if found guilty of sexual offences against our children and grandchildren.
These regulations should be improved further to even look into investigating those in authority at schools protecting the perpetrators.
I still have though a concern that, the Audi alteram partem (listen to the other side of story) will apply during the period leading to prosecution.
The poor child, being unceremoniously cross examined by perpetrator's lawyers, going through that ordeal, reliving the abuse, will break the child even further.
But big up to (the Department of) Basic Education and the unions in welcoming the regulations.
∎ Earlier this week, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga published regulations intended to prevent the re-employment of teachers dismissed for misconduct.
