Big hitter, Thimna Ngqwemla taking it back to the basics with a solid front foot defence.
Langa Cricket Club’s senior women’s team held a three-hour training session at the Langa Sports Complex on Sunday, October 6.
Divided into three sessions – fielding, fitness, and a net session — the team is just two weeks away from the start of the Western Cape Cricket Association (WCCA) women’s leagues.
Anam Mde, the coach of both the junior and senior women’s teams, noted that half of the players are preparing for the under-16 and under-19 provincial trials taking place at Curro Durbanville on Saturday October 12.
He said the boys’ teams are also gearing up for the under-15 and under-19 indoor provincial trials, set to occur at Bellville Technical High this weekend.
“We are trying to cover all the basic skills over three hours. We started with fundamentals in forward and backfoot defence, then moved on to check drives, backfoot drives, and front foot drives. We spent 30 minutes on ground fielding and another 30 minutes on catching,” said Mde.
“We then returned to live nets to see if they could recall the basics from the morning session. When they arrive on the pitch, it’s crucial they understand the importance of checking the playing conditions,” he said.
Coach Mde also oversees the junior teams at Langa Cricket Hub and mentioned that they are recruiting players for all age groups, from under-9 to under-19, as well as for the senior men’s and women’s teams.
“We welcome all age groups, young and old, for the junior and senior teams. What I emphasise to the players is that studies are important. We scheduled today’s Sunday session because some have afternoon classes during the week,” said Mde.
Training takes place at the Langa Sports Complex from Tuesday to Thursday, at 4pm. For more information, contact coach Anam Mde at 076 523 7070.
On Friday, October 18, Langa Cricket Hub will host Gugulethu Cricket Hub, in Langa, for a Supersport Schools televised match.
