Langa Athletics shines at 10km Freedom race

More than 1500 runners took to the streets of Langa for the annual TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom 10km race

Langa Athletics Club members dominated its annual 10km club race at the weekend, with Fortunate Chidzivo the first female to cross the finish line, followed by clubmate Marie-Tinka Olivie, In te men's division, Edward Jack and Yanga Malusi came second and third for in Langa colours with first place going to Athlete's Academy's Awethu Ntsotho.  

More than 1500 runners from all corners of the Western Cape and further afield, along with supporters, poured into Langa on Sunday July 20, for the TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom, which was previously postponed. Sunday's race was the fourth the club has hosted, he first race hosted back in 2022.

This year’s race honoured former president Nelson Mandela's legacy by bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging and shared humanity. 

“The energy and spirit we witnessed today were nothing short of extraordinary,” said club chairman of Molebatsi Matube. 

Fortunate Chidzivo, centre, was first to cross the finish line at the weekend's 10km race, in Langa. On her left is Marie-Tinka Olivier, who finished second, and on her right is third-placed finisher Fina Dube.

Regarded as one of the city’s elite running clubs, Langa AC attracts members from different communities, while focusing on athletics and promoting and encouraging a healthy lifestyle in Langa and surrounding areas. The club has enabled many talented runners to reach their full potential within running circles.
